How SGS Hit 26% User Adoption Rate with Intelex App Builder

SGS needed a software platform that could be customized to fit the needs of their business.

By choosing Intelex, SGS found a partner and collaborator that would help them create a management system that significantly reduced incidents, streamlined reporting and improved efficiency.

Challenge

With more than 96,000 employees at 2,600 sites worldwide, SGS needed to collect enormous amounts of data to manage its health and safety processes and to ensure it followed consistent standards.

To help protect those employees, SGS turned to Intelex. Around the same time the Operational Integrity department was established at SGS in 2009-2010, Intelex was introduced into the company.

With tens of thousands of employees operating in 100+ countries, “there was a very significant need to digitalize the HSE processes during that time, in particular incident, hazard and near miss reporting and management," says Mikki Teodoro, Global Operations Integrity (OI) Communications and IT.

Prior to implementing Intelex, SGS conducted its reporting on paper and aggregated data in dozens of Excel spreadsheets to produce the necessary statistics.

“Naturally, there was no traceable visibility of incident investigations and corrective actions, which was a big challenge. When Intelex went live, we were able to gather more reliable data,” says Teodoro.

The challenge to gather the most comprehensive, reliable data sets possible continues, but now – using the data collected from the Intelex platform – SGS is able to produce “meaningful and
helpful insights without overwhelming our network with too much information.”

Another challenge was to ensure that any software tools used were representative of real-world and operational needs and made sense for the actual end users.

This last point is particularly important and is still an on-going challenge as if the tools don’t fit into the day to day work of the end users, workers simply won’t use them.

As a result, the ability to create customized applications using the Intelex App Builder function has been fundamental in tailoring the system to meet the needs of the company and the expectations of employees

Intelex Solution

SGS needs the ability to customize applications to meet its unique requirements.

SGS uses the Intelex App Builder to build or customize apps for its employees, including:

Employees have responded well to the system and the customised apps and use them, says Teodoro. “Over the course of implementation, 2,700 reports have been created via the Business Intelligence tool by the SGS global team, including regional system administrators. The current system includes all 1,700 valid sites in SGS with a current inventory of 25,000 active users all over the world.

Results

  • Intelex is one of the top four most-used applications at SGS, with 91 dashboards created by global and local administrators.
  • Between 2009 and 2021, SGS has shown significant improvement in LTIR (Lost Time Incident Rate) and TRIR (Total Recordable Incident Rate).
  • The most significant drop in incident rates was in 2014-2015, when SGS first deployed Intelex and the Incident Management module was the strongest app used by SGS employees.
  • In 2016, SGS created a fully integrated HSE performance report using Intelex’s BI tool. It combined nine different reporting sources into one functional, dynamic, real-time report.
  • In 2019, SGS used App Builder to integrate vehicle telematics into the Intelex platform.
