Regional District Achieves Top Environmental Standard Intelex Technologies Inc., a leading provider of environmental management solutions, today announced that its client, the Regional District of Nanaimo Liquid Waste Department has just become the first wastewater treatment department in the province of British Columbia to register an ISO 14001-certified Environmental Management System. The new system conforms to ISO 14001 (2004), an internationally-recognized standard that provides organizations with a systematic method of improving environmental performance. Dennis Trudeau, who is now Acting RDN Manager of Transportation Services, first championed the ISO initiative. "We implemented the Liquid Waste Department Environmental Management System to assure the RDN Board and the public that our facilities are being managed to this international standard in a safe, efficient and environmentally-conscious manner," said Trudeau. According to long-time Greater Nanaimo Pollution Control Centre operator Chuck White, the system encourages more collaboration between operations, engineering and planning staff within the RDN Liquid Waste Department. "At first I thought the Environmental Management System would be overly bureaucratic, but it isn't," White said. "Instead of getting bottlenecked between departments, we have much more freedom to work together and get ideas out there. The system gives us a mechanism so that when we see ways to enhance our operation, there is a very streamlined way to achieve that." RDN Acting Manager of Liquid Waste Sean De Pol says the system represents an ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility. "We'll be setting new goals each year, so that we continue to be as up-to-date and proactive as possible in our operations," said De Pol. The new system is expected to result in significant short-and-long-term cost savings for the RDN. In the United States, operations similar to the RDN's treatment facilities have been able to conserve water and electricity and reduce use of chemicals through introducing Environmental Management Systems. "This is an outstanding achievement for the Liquid Waste Department, and all of our operators worked hard to achieve this standard," said RDN Chairperson Joe Stanhope. "I am impressed with the dedicated effort that our Liquid Waste Department staff put in to reach this level. Our objective is to attain this level of certification in other areas of the RDN." "RDN's commitment to environmental responsibility is impressive," said Mark Jaine, Executive Vice President, Intelex Technologies Inc. "We are proud that RDN has embraced and implemented the principles of ISO 14001, and we wholeheartedly congratulate them on their registration." Regional District of Nanaimo (Liquid Waste Department): The Regional District of Nanaimo is one of the fastest growing regions in British Columbia, Canada with a population of more than 131,000 people and some of Vancouver Island's most livable communities. The Liquid Waste Department owns and operates four wastewater treatment facilities, eighteen pump stations and two septage receiving sites between Qualicum Beach and Duke Point. These facilities perform the essential process of transporting and treating wastewater that leaves our homes and businesses. The LWD complies with environmental regulations and follows efficient, conscientious practice. For more information visit www.rdn.bc.ca, email liquidwaste@rdn.bc.ca, or call 250-390-6560.
